This study was undertaken to determine if Juglandis Semen Aquacupuncture has a protective effect against Hg-induced acute renal failure in rabbits. Rabbits received subuctaneous injection of 8 §·/§¸ HgCl©ü In experiments for Juglandis Semen Aquacupuncture effect, rabbits received each 0.5 §¢ of Juglandis Semen-herb extraction in both sides of Shinsu(BL23) for 2 days before and 2 days after treatment of HgCl©ü. Hg treatment induced an increased serum creatinine levels, and a decrease in urine volume and glomerular filtration rate, which were accompanied by an increase in fractional excretion of Na^+ and glucose and urinary excretion of protein. These results show that Hg results in oliguric acute renal failure. Juglandis Semen Aquacupuncture significantly decreased serum creatinine level, and increased the decreased glomerular filtration rate and decreased the increased fractional excretion of Na^+ and glucose and urinary protein excretion induced by Hg, induced by Hg, indication that Juglandis Semen Aquacupuncture ameliorates Hg-induced acute renal failure.
These results suggest that Juglandis Semen Aquacupuncture could be used in prevention and treatment of heavy metal-induced acute renal failure. However, the precise mechanisms of Juglandis Semen Aquacupuncture protection remain to be determined.
